]]><![CDATA[Weekly Marsh Report 10/17/2012]]>Wed, 17 Oct 2012 16:38:44 GMThttp://chesapeakepursuits.com/3/post/2012/10/weekly-marsh-report-10172012.html     With everyone undoubtedly preparing for the opening of blackpowder season tomorrow, we chose to post the weekly report a day early. Stags haven't been as vocal or mobile as last week. Perhaps the're holed up with and tending to hot does. There has still however been a good deal of daylight activity in the 8:30 to 11am range. That being said, stay in your stand longer than normal tomorrow morning. It could pay big dividends in the form of a nice stag.

     The wind is predicted to be from the south to southwest for the next several days. Furthermore, high tides in the mid to lower Dorchester County area are set to be around dusk AND dawn. When this happens, expect the high water to push sika out of the marsh and into the woods. (Anyone remember the flood tides of last year's muzzleloader season?). So tomorrow and friday should be great days to sit in the WOODS at dusk and dawn. Add the predicted rain for friday and you've got a recipe for success.

     Mosquitoes are still moderate to low thanks to cool temps and dry conditions.

    Please remember your blaze orange and be safe with the soon to be larger crowd in the marsh. If ya shoot a nice one or just want to swap stories, stop by the shop in Church Creek. We'd love to see it or at least hear about your day in the marsh.

Eric]]><![CDATA[10/12/12 Weekly Marsh Report]]>Fri, 12 Oct 2012 19:23:37 GMThttp://chesapeakepursuits.com/3/post/2012/10/101212-weekly-marsh-report.htmlWe apologize for the delay but we were hunting in the marsh all day yesterday and then until 1am trying to track a big stag that was shot. That being said, the stags are responding VERY well to calling. There is still not an excessive amount of chasing as the majority of does do not seem to be in heat yet. The stags however are very aggressive and responding to the challenge sounds of growls and bugles. We were able to call 2 mature stags to within bow range yesterday. There are also TONS of reports of other hunters being successful with calls. Furthermore, there has been a good bit of mid morning action from about 8:30 to 11 with stags on their feet and looking for action after the hinds have bedded for the morning.

Conditions look to be cool and dry this weekend with steady breezes. The forecasted 10-15 mph winds for this weekend should be just enough to hide your sound and movement if you choose to get on the ground and go after that big stag on foot.... and NOW is the time to do it.

Safety note: the early waterfowl season comes in tomorrow. Please be courteous if you are sharing the marsh/woods with those after teal, woodies, mallards, etc. Although it is not a regulation, we recommend wearing an orange cap, etc. on these days for safety reasons or at least so you or the waterfowlers don't set up too close interfere with each other's hunts.

Mosquito levels are average to low. The wind has seemed to keep them off of us in the past few days and the cool temps have definitely seemed to slow their activity level.

...and if you shoot your stag tonight or tomorrow morning and feel like there's nothing to do, the rockfish are reported to be biting very well in the local rivers on peelers as well as light tackle trolling and jigging.

Full moon and 80* temps have put a damper on things :) We did catch some brief movement and sika rut activity this week but it was brief and weather dependent (Cool mornings).

There is a weather front approaching this weekend that will cool things off drastically on Sunday. This should jump start some good sika activity. Watch your tide levels Saturday as SW winds push water into bay and tributaries and flood marshes. Use this to your advantage to catch sika coming out of the marsh. But beware of the tides!

Mosquitoes are ever present, bring your ThermaCELLs.

]]><![CDATA[Thursday 9/27/2012 Weekly Marsh Report]]>Thu, 27 Sep 2012 14:03:22 GMThttp://chesapeakepursuits.com/3/post/2012/09/thursday-9272012-weekly-marsh-report.html      The recent warm weather trend seems to have temporarily slowed daytime activity a bit for the sikas... That being said, stags are definitely searching for and following does. NOW is the time to hunt close to doe bedding sites as the stags will be either looking for 'em or holed up with 'em. As Jason and I always say: "if you ain't in the phrag, you won't get no stag". I can personally attest to that after yesterday morning's hunt :).

We expect the mid day/early afternoon activity to pick up a bit this weekend as the weather will cool a bit. Furthermore, the approaching full moon phase will get the deer on their feet at mid day as well.

     The mosquitoes are average to thick. Another force of nature to contend with are the horse flies or "green head flies" as we sometimes call 'em. Be sure to wear gloves and long sleeves AND run the ThermaCELL to keep these dive bombers at bay.

     Now good luck and go get em. We want to hear some good huntin' stories from y'all.

For us at Chesapeake Pursuits, we are beginning to feel like a bunch of kids before Christmas.... something REALLY exciting is within just a few days!!! What we are referring to of course is the sika rut. We have heard from multiple reliable sources that have spent lifetimes on the marsh say that the sikas are beginning to do their thing. There's been a tad bit more bugling and the stags are on foot and beginning to search for does. The weather has been cool and crisp, leading to more comfortable conditions for the stags to be on their feet and on the move. We recommend going to your setups that are in travel corridors between doe bedding areas or on travel routes from feed to bed (and vice-versa in the evening) as stags will be searching for romantic companionship in the form of a hind right about now. Don't be afraid to do some calling but not too aggressive this week as the big boys aren't that fired up yet. You can probably go wide open next week.

As far as the mosquitoes are concerned, they aren't as bad as last week, but they are certainly much worse than we had during the mid summer drought. Bring the ThermaCELL for sure as the last thing you want to do is spook that trophy sika by swatting at skeeters when he comes into bow range.

Now go hit the marsh.... good luck and shoot straight, and remember to aim low ;)

Skeeters have made their presence known again after the recent rain fall. Bring your ThermaCELL for sure. Bugles are starting to be heard at dusk and that always makes for a worthy hunt!

Water levels are normal to low.

Friday weather is calling for 80 degress and winds light from the SE

940 am and 350 pm are minor and major movement times for Sat

Saturdays weather is calling for sunny and mid 70's winds and winds 10-15 from the N

    Lunar Influence The moon is also a large factor in the day-to-day activities of wildlife. Some of the lunar influences are obvious while some are not. The most obvious and measurable forces the moon exerts on the earth are gravitational and rotational which are easily demonstrated by observing tides. The gravitational force of the moon is one of the primary influences in the rise and fall of tides. The period that the moon exerts its greatest influence at any specific location on earth is based on the relative position of the moon, the distance the moon is from the earth (apogee/perigee) and the angle of the moon above that position (declination).
     Most evidence indicates that the periods of greatest lunar influence on wildlife is when the moon is most directly overhead and then again when it is most directly underfoot (opposite side of the earth). These two positions are usually referred to as "major" or excellent activity periods. There are two other daily periods of lunar influence that occur halfway between the overhead and underfoot positions and they are usually referred to as "minor" or "good" activity periods.
     When the moon is at perigee (closest to earth) all other lunar influences are magnified. This is also the case when the moon is at its highest declination or so called high moon. The moon phase has also been shown to indicate, if not directly cause, certain heightened periods of activity
