<![CDATA[Spring bounties White Perch run]]>Tue, 19 Mar 2013 14:06:50 GMThttp://chesapeakepursuits.com/1/post/2013/03/spring-bounties-white-perch-run.htmlJust like the yellow perch the white perch make their spawning runs into the fresh waters of our Chesapeake tributaries. Another Chesapeake Pursuit.
Even with the unstable weather pattern MD has been dealing with the white perch have been trying to make a run. Been very hit or miss but when its happening we've been into citation sized white perch. 5 year old Brooke caught her first citation fish a healthy fat perch.

When fishing bigger bodies of structureless waters we switch from artificial to bai
t.

J.O.'s Southern Style fish fry batter was used to season the fish and this is an outstanding batter!

<![CDATA[Tidal water perch run cont'd]]>Mon, 04 Mar 2013 14:51:30 GMThttp://chesapeakepursuits.com/1/post/2013/03/tidal-water-perch-run-contd.htmlNot just to boast pictures but in the hopes of being helpful here is a weekend report from 3/2 .
Jason took his 5 year old daughter Brooke out for some light tackle fun. We boarded with good friend Al Heinken and his son Ryan. Its a once a year venture we take with the kids on MD's upper tidal river systems.

Saturday found us at the end of the in coming tide and leaving on the outfgoing. True to form the slack was our least productive. We caught Yellow perch on a variety of 1/8 to 1/4 jigs. Brooke caught her first fish on a lure saturday and it happened to be the first fish of the day a keeper yellow on a 1/8 oz black/chart 1" jig body tipped with minnow. Way to start the day.
We ended up with a nice mixed bag of crappie and yellows for the day all using the same structure.. Add in a Large mouth and solid pickerel. This type fishing I love it requires some finesse and and finding a pattern. I found todays pattern was deep and slow but close structure on a moving tide.
It's always nice, no great, to spend a day on the water with family and friends. Being a successful day was just icing on the cake. The day ended with some scenic snow showers on the upper Choptank and a bonus pickerel.

<![CDATA[Fishing has begun! Perch run]]>Mon, 18 Feb 2013 21:10:58 GMThttp://chesapeakepursuits.com/1/post/2013/02/fishing-has-begun-perch-run.htmlAs most of you know Chesapeake Pursuits is about just that. The pursuits of all things Chesapeake and when hunting falls off its time right away to prepare for the spring treasures of our area. Mid to late Feb we usually expect to see our first yellows showing up on the spawning runs thru the Chesapeake tributaries.

Right on time for a much needed fish fry Jason, Larry and Brooke landed some eating fish. Fish were caught on channel ledges using a mixture of 1/8 oz shad darts and minnows.
We used a batter that included egg,
JO's seasoning, flour ,salt and pepper.. Deep fried to a crispy taste of heaven. If your heading out good luck! And pick up some JO's fish seasoning.. its a must here!

<![CDATA[Another Youth waterfowl hunt]]>Sat, 16 Feb 2013 20:28:04 GMThttp://chesapeakepursuits.com/1/post/2013/02/another-youth-waterfowl-hunt.html
As Eric mentioned Maryland's late youth waterfowl hunt was a huge success and bitterly COLD. The NW winds gusting to 40 MPH kept Jason's Avery Pro Grade goose decoys sliding upright until we pegged them all tight! The ground was hard as a rock and frozen.. The geese hunkered tight and waited out the wind... meanwhile .......

Jason and Alex had decide the best bet was to find some ducks trading back and forth as the winds calmed . We hit the road toward Dorchesters marsh.
We found an area on the marsh that had some leeward areas where puddle ducks wanted refuge. We were on the X for an hour. Teal and teal and more Green wing teal wanted in our spot.. Perfect for a young hunter honing his skills on shooting those marsh darts. Alex was able to limit on teal and these were his first ever puddle ducks, and beautiful mounting specimens at that. Jason being a professional taxidermist rarely gets the opportunity to mount fully plumed February killed drakes! BONUS!! On the wall they go... after the carcass was picked clean over the dinner table ( for those who've never eatin teal- Oh my! goood)

Congrats to Rachel and Eric on this day as well. After surfing the net it looked like Maryland's youth waterfowl day was a success!!
